«Purple» – Eine Geschichte von Eilidh Janssens

After a daring heist shakes the kingdom, Elliot and his friend Mary discover that the royal authorities are already searching for the culprits. While the newspaper spreads fear and outrage among the citizens, the two realize that something even more important is hidden in the announcement below the article. The upcoming Light Festival might give them the one opportunity they have been waiting for — a chance to finally enter the fortress and put their long-prepared plan into action.

“You cannot be serious. Haven’t you read about this yet?” Mary is looking at me with her big purple eyes and handing me a piece of newspaper. “I told you, I have not! I was sleeping.” I snatch the wrinkled paper from her hands. By the looks of it, it’s gone through a lot before getting to her. It’s a wonder she managed to get a hold of it in the first place.

I sit on my bed and read out loud: “Last night” so two nights ago, since this is from yesterday, “a gang infiltrated the city’s safe and stole the sacred gemstone. The royal police captured one suspect, but it has been suggested that the group consisted of five people.” Funny, we were three, not five, and the person they captured luckily isn’t one of us. I’m sorry for them though, the royals are probably going to question them…

“Do you think they’ll question them?” A voice close to my ear asks. I jump. “Mary! Stop being so sneaky! Yes, I’m sure they will, but it’s not from our side, is it? We should be safe.” She’s doing it again, looking at me with her shiny, purple eyes. “But it’s a bit unfair, don’t you think?” Why is she so close suddenly? I can see her freckles. She’s pretty.

“Ugh, are you trying to make me feel guilty again?” I try to shove her away. “I’m telling you, we will not go on a rescue mission to get them back, they’re not even one of us.”

“Awww, but Eliott…” Nope, not again. “No is no. I won’t change my mind.”

I continue reading: “It is a scandal that we must worry about such things!” Ah, that’s the emperor speaking, such a jerk. The leaders of this kingdom are all corrupt jerks, incapable of thinking for themselves. They all live up there, in that stupid fortress, while we’re forced to rot down here. “We shall take all necessary measures to capture the vandals who did this and make them pay.” I roll my eyes. Wow, scary threat.

“Is this what you wanted to show me, Mar?” She’s close again.

“Not really, look here.” She points at the bottom of the paper. How are her fingers so thin if she’s a better fighter than me? Makes me jealous.

Her voice is soft: “It is with great honour that the royal newspaper informs you, citizens of Gon, that this year’s annual light festival will take place next month. Preparations will begin on the 3rd this month, and we greatly encourage you to lend us a hand to make this the most memorable light festival of Gon’s history…” She lifts her head. Purple.

“Elliot! Do you know what that means? We finally get the chance to go up there! Legally!”

Of course I know! “This is what we’ve prepared for for ages! We can finally put our plan into action!” This woke me up. I’m standing now, and Mary is holding my hands. I can’t tell who’s more excited. “We’ll make them pay!”
